4 Things To Do In Wainfleet

Wainfleet, located on the north shore of Lake Erie, is a rural township and farming community. It encompasses about 9km of the Lake Erie shoreline and 20km of the Welland River. The area is full of fantastic hiking trails, impressive natural sights, and other attractions.

If you’ve just moved to Wainfleet, you may be wondering what to do in the area during your downtime. Take a look at some of the fun and exciting activities that you can do in Wainfleet!

1. Morgan’s Point Conservation Area

We mentioned that Wainfleet is a fantastic place to experience the outdoors, and Morgan’s Point Conservation Area is the first place we’d recommend to lovers of nature. Located along the Lake Erie shorelines in Wainfleet, Morgan’s Point Conservation Area is open for hiking and birdwatching but be aware that there are no facilities nearby.

You’ll get to see the ‘old growth’ forest native to the area as well as the remnants of the oak savannah prairie that used to cover the Niagara Peninsula. You’ll want to take your camera when hiking this area to get pictures of everything from the picturesque dunes to the majestic Sugar Maple, Black Walnut, and Hop Hornbeam trees.

Morgan’s Point is a conservation area, so the boardwalk has been installed to reduce the human impact on the native flora and fauna. If you head out here, please stick to the boardwalk!

2. Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area

Another fantastic way to spend the day outdoors in Wainfleet is to head out to the Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area. This area of land used to be covered by a shallow, warm sea approximately 300 – 450 million years ago and, more recently, was the site of a clay and limestone quarry.

Today, the Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area is home to an impressive variety of birds, including Yellow Warblers, Great Blue Herons, Sandpipers, Terns, and maybe even a Bald Eagle or two! Other species you’ll likely see include fish, waterfowl, turtles and snakes!

You can also glimpse the prehistoric history of the area with the exposed fossils viewing sites in the Onondaga Foundation, the quarry walls and the rock tableland. Fossils include those of the plants and animals that used to live in the area millions of years ago.

The conservation area is an award-winning site in Wainfleet, having won the Bronze Plaque Award for quarry rehabilitation with the Management of Abandoned Aggregate Properties Program.

3. Skydive Burnaby

If you’re looking for a heart stopping day out, why not try Skydive Burnaby?

At this local skydive center, you’ll learn to skydive in the morning, and then, weather permitting, you’ll hop on a plane and hurl yourself out of it while attached to a skydiving instructor. Granted, this isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for something more exhilarating, Skydive Burnaby may be the one for you.

After you’ve done your jump, you’ll even be able to grab some photos and videos of it, meaning you’ll always have a memento of those terrifying few minutes you fell to earth!

It is important to note that local weather may affect your day out, so you should call ahead to make sure it will be possible for you to dive that day.

4. 905 Rentals

If you’ve already hiked the trails on the Lake Erie shorelines, you might now want to get onto the water, and with 905 Rentals, you can do just that!

This equipment rental company allows you to rent everything from jetskis and stand-up paddleboards to kayaks and canoes. Located on Long Beach on the north shore of Lake Erie, renting out watersports equipment is a great way to spice up a day at the beach.

It is recommended that you set aside a good few hours for these activities, and 905 Rentals will ensure you have all of the equipment and safety gear needed to have the best time, whichever equipment you choose.
