Port Colborne is one of the most south-western towns in Ontario. It is proudly located on the shore of Lake Erie right at the mouth of the Welland Canal, which is nestled in Gravelly Bay.

A small rural town in the Niagara Region with over 20,000 residents and a rich heritage, Port Colborne, much like the rest of the Niagara Region, is blessed with the unique microclimate that brings milder winters, longer summers and provides above average agricultural potential.

The Welland Canal and Lake Erie Waterfront

The Welland Canal was completed in 1833 and has since been a staple in Port Colborne’s community and industry. The canal runs straight through the middle of Port Colborne and is home to one of the three remaining lift bridges that are still in operation on the Welland Canal, Bridge 21. It is also home to the world’s second longest canal lock, Lock 8, which has a length of 421m and is a popular place for both boat-watching and other leisurely activities in the park that surrounds the lock.

The Welland Canal which connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario annually passes around 3,000 ships over the 43km that it spans, with those ships transporting over 40 million tons of cargo a year. You can learn more about the history of the Welland Canal and the role it played in the community throughout the years by visiting the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum.
